Romania Rejects US Warning on Rule of Law

Romania’s parliament has rejected a warning from the US State Department urging it to halt a controversial bill that allegedly threatens judicial independence, accusing Washington of interfering in domestic policy.

Romania’s ruling Social Democrat-led coalition vowed to continue controversial justice reforms on Tuesday and rejected a tough warning from the US State Department as interference in the country’s domestic affairs.

The US State Department on Monday night urged parliament in Bucharest to reject a bill that is alleged to threaten judicial independence and anti-graft efforts.

Analysts have warned that politicians in the Social Democrat-led governing coalition have been following an increasingly conservative nationalist agenda, despite the fact that they have also been trying to boost relations with Washington.
