Reward Offered to Find EULEX Officer's Killer

More than a week after the killing of a EULEX customs officer in northern Kosovo, the EU law mission and Kosovo Police announced a reward of up to 27,500 euro for information.

Announcing the reward, Pascal Persoons, a EULEX Prosecutor, said he was making “a personal appeal to anyone who has seen something, to say something. If you have seen anything unusual – no matter how small or insignificant you think it is - please report it, either to the local police, or to EULEX, on +381 38 78 6565.

"Everything you say will be treated in strictest confidence,” he added.

Persoons made the announcement during a joint press conference in Mitrovica, northern Kosovo, of officials from the EU rule-of-law mission and the Kosovo Police.

The investigation into the murder of Audrius Senavicius is being carried out by a mixed team of EULEX Police and Kosovo Police investigators under supervision of two EULEX prosecutors.

The Lithuanian customs officer was shot dead in an ambush in Serb-run northern Kosovo last Thursday as he was on his way to work.

His convoy was ambushed in the vicinity of the Banjska Junction, about 7km north of Zvecan/Zveqan in northern Kosovo. The exact motive for the killing is unknown.

The case falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Special Prosecution Office in Kosovo.
Andrew Carney, EULEX's lead prosecutor on the case, said 20 investigators were involved in the investigation.

“We are following a number of lines of enquiry. The task of the investigators will be to investigate each line of enquiry to their natural conclusion,” he said.

The murder has been condemned by officials in Pristina, Belgrade and Brussels who have called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The killing has raised tensions in northern Kosovo ahead of nationwide local elections due in November - the first staged in Kosovo since Kosovo and Serbia agreed a landmark deal on "normalising" their relations.
