RECOM to Send Postcards to Presidents

Seeking to gain support for the creation of regional truth commission, RECOM advocates are asking citizens of the capitals in the region to send postcards to their presidents.

On Saturday, September 22, the RECOM activists will organize series of meetings in Sarajevo, Belgrade and Podgorica where citizens will write postcards asking the presidents of the countries in the region to form the RECOM coalition.

Zdravko Grebo, a Sarajevo professor and an advocate in Bosnia, said at a press conference in Sarajevo that the RECOM project has gone as far as it could as a civil society initiative.

“It is time for the presidents to form expert groups whose only goal would be to determine the truth about war crimes and human right violations. It is the mission of this generation in this time, not to allow the chance that we have - to finally have an open discussion about all the horrors of the past – to disappear”, said Grebo.

The team of RECOM advocates said that it is necessary to finally find the exact number of dead in the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 2001 in order to stop the “political games of who is the biggest victim”.

“This is why it is absolutely vital for RECOM to be completely politically independent”, explained Grebo and added it would also be good if the exact number of refugees, and those injured, raped and missing would be ascertained.

The RECOM advocates and citizens will write postcards and address them to members of the Bosnian tripartite presidency, as well as the presidents of the former Yugoslav countries, and ask for support to the RECOM idea.

The Coalition for RECOM is a non-political regional network of civil society organizations and individuals whose aim it is to promote the creation of a regional commission tasked with establishing facts about war crimes and human rights violations committed in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001.
