Pro-Govt Media Keeps Right-Wing Serbs Onside

Pro-government tabloids have published a series of articles this summer claiming that Washington and US-based organisations have been deliberately raising tensions in Serbia in an attempt to destabilise the country and alienate Belgrade from Moscow.

The media that praise Russian politics, support Serbian government policies and label those who criticise the government’s work as ‘mercenaries’, enjoy the respect of and friendly relations with Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.

Experts and a BIRN source close to senior officials claim that these media serve as the government’s mouthpiece. However, they believe pro-government outlets are not seeking to simply reflect Serbian state officials’ positions but to maintain the administration’s support among right-wing voters.

In recent years, Serbian media associations and independent researchers have often criticised the government’s attitude to the media.
