One person has died in a fire which broke out around noon in Podgorica on Monday, destroying offices of the newspaper Dan and radio station Radio D.
"In less than a minute, everything was on fire," said Nikola Markovic, the deputy editor of Dan. He also said that the fire brigade was called immediately and came 10 minutes later.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Markovic said that the most likely cause was old electrical installations. Milovan Zivkovic, one of the electricians who were inside the building at the time of the fire, has been found dead.
Dan is an opposition Montenegrin daily, with a relatively high circulation. Outside of Montenegro it is mostly known for the murder of its owner and editor-in-chief, Dusko Jovanovic, in 2004.
While the fire was still being brought under control, opposition politicians gathered in front of the building. They criticised the fire brigade for not responding more quickly.
Branko Radulovic, an official from the opposition Movement for Changes, offered the offices of his party to the editorial staff of Dan to ensure the newspaper could go on publishing.
"This is a tragedy for the newspaper, which fought for justice, working in modest conditions and being under constant pressure from the regime," Radulovic said.
Both communities in Kosovo blame politics for the trial of Fatmir Limaj - though from diametrically opposing points of view.
