Northern Albania Faces Fresh Floods

Nearly 1300 hectares of arable land have been covered by rising waters in the region of Shkodra, in Northern Albania, after the Albanian Power Corporation started discharging water from its dams on the river Drin due to high level of rainfall. Flooding has also been reported in Serbia and Macedonia.

Albanian Minister of Interior Lulzim Basha called a meeting of the Ministerial Committee of Civil Emergencies on Tuesday to asses the situation and initiate the necessary measures for a possible evacuation of the population at risk.

“The situation has precipitated swiftly and calls for full monitoring and readiness by all institutions,” said Basha during the meeting.

In neighbouring Macedonia several villages on the banks of the river Vardar near Tetovo were also reporting flooding.

Flooding has also been seen in several areas in Serbia, with local media reporting that heavy rain had caused severe flooding in the municipalities in Leskovac, Niš, Kraljevo, Rača, Knić, Jagodina and Gadžin Han.

In January the same area in the region of Shkodra, Albania was hit by the worst flood in decades, causing an estimated €20 million in damages to private property and infrastructure.
