There is no need for snap polls, the head of Macedonia’s junior coalition partner, the ethnic Albanian democratic Union for Integration, DUI, Ali Ahmeti, told media.

He was addressing rising speculations of early elections in the country that gained momentum after Skopje in December failed to get a desired start date for EU accession talks.
“There are snap polls when a country faces a crisis or when things are not going as they should. We are not even close to these symptoms, the [ruling] coalition functions well and there is no concern whatsoever about a political crisis,” Ahmeti said.
He argued that cooperation with the major governing party, the centre right VMRO DPMNE, is based on principles that are being respected.
Ahmeti once again mentioned resolving the burning Athens-Skopje “name” spat as the main objective of the country “that has no alternative”. He said that developments regarding this issue are moving in the right direction, with the recent warming of bilateral relations between the two sides.
The row has become the main obstacle for the country’s entry in to NATO and EU, as Greece, a member of both, has blocked Macedonia’s path towards full membership citing a lasting resolution to the 18-year-long name spat.
Ahmeti also denied speculation that he soon plans to change several of DUI’s ministers in the government.
