Montenegrin Daily Director Beaten

Podgorica_The director of Montenegrin Daily “Vijesti” Zeljko Ivanovic was brutally beaten on early Saturday morning in the center of Podgorica.

Ivanovic had just left the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Daily “Vijesti”, when three attackers came out of the darkness and beat him with wooden and metal bars. One of the attackers was masked.

Despite injuries, Ivanovic managed to return to the restaurant, after which he was transferred to the hospital.

After the doctor's examination, Ivanovic was allowed to return home. The doctors said he had several fractures and bruising, but that his overall condition was good.

“This is the handwriting of the powers that haven’t got enough courage to face me. Only Milo Djukanovic and his family can send this kind of greeting”, Ivanovic told Balkan Insight.

Milo Djukanovic is the president of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists and the ex Prime Minister. He was unavailable for comment on Saturday.

Ivanovic added he will request the resignation of the Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, Chief of Police and the National Security Agency if the perpetrators and instigators of this crime are not found in next seven days.

“Vijesti” is one of the two biggest Montenegrin papers and regularly reports on the problems and illnesses of Montenegrin society and its leaders.

Vijesti stated on Saturday that the message was clear, because it was sent on the tenth anniversary of the newspaper.

“Our editorial policy is the reason for the attack. That is clear”, Mihailo Jovovic, the desk editor told Balkan Insight.
