Residents of the Bosnia and Herzegovina capital, Sarajevo, woke up on Monday morning to find the city covered in several centimeters of snow.

An unusual phenomenon for mid-May, the snow brought back memories of the extreme cold wave that hit Bosnia and Herzegovina and the rest of the region in January and February, media said.

Although low temperatures and snow had been forecast, most Sarajevo residents were taken by surprise by the severity of the blizzard.

The snow is currently several centimeters thick but has not caused any traffic disruption. However, "pedestrians are moving with great difficulty due to the huge volume of water," reports said.

Snowfall fell in nearby mountains and in some other towns across Bosnia. At the same time, the town of Trebinje in Herzegovina reported temperatures as high as 25 degrees centigrade.

Snowfall was also reported in the mountains of southwestern Serbia and northern Montenegro.
