The western Macedonian town of Debar has been cut off from the capital Skopje after a massive 500 metre wide landslide crossed the road in the mountainous area near the Mavrovo tourist resort.

Authorities believe no one was injured during the slide, which happened late Thursday, and said that there were no cars trapped under the 25 metre tall mass covering the road.
The intensive cleaning operation began last night and continued into the morning, but it will take days to clear off the road section.
Eyewitnesses told local media that the sight of ground crumbling down was horrifying. The slide tore up trees and pulled massive rocks down the mountain; some of the passersby barely escaped unhurt.
