Macedonia Restaurants to Close in Protest

Macedonia's bar and restaurant owners will close their establishments on Friday in a 24-hour protest against the new strict anti smoking law that they say will drive them out of business.

At today’s press conference their association said that they will not change their mind even after the ruling party, the centre right VMRO DPMNE, announced some concessions.

The Chamber of Restaurateurs, an association standing behind the protest, called on all restaurateurs to show solidarity and join in on the shut-down.

Their aim is to make the government aware of the decline of business their industry is suffering after the introduction of the law 20 days ago. They say the number of customers has declined drastically.

Many establishments will be forced to close or let employees go, they say, arguing this will have long term negative effect on the tourist industry as well.

Since New Year, anyone caught with cigarette smoking inside a bar or restaurant is eligible for a 150 to 300 euro fine. The fines for the owners and managers go from 1000 to 3000 euros.

VMRO DPMNE yesterday announced amendments to the law that would allow smokers to enjoy their habit if sitting outdoors, but only from 1 March to 31 October.

Café and restaurant owners are asking for less strict regulations that accomodate both smokers and non smokers.
