Macedonia Press Review ' June 18, 2010

Here are the top stories in Macedonia’s main newspapers. Balkan Insight has not verified the reports and cannot vouch for their accuracy.

DNEVNIK

The daily reports on the main points of an analysis conducted by the European Stability Initiative, ESI, about solving the Macedonia-Greece name spat. According to the analysis, Macedonia should agree to change its name and to put this change into its constitution in exchange for the immediate start of its EU accession talks. But the country should put such a decision into effect only after it enters the EU. ESI is a non-profit research and policy institute.

UTRINSKI VESNIK

Macedonia might join the important gas transit corridor “South Stream” through construction of a branch on its territory, the daily says. This was the subject of yesterday’s discussion between the visiting high level Macedonian delegation led by the President Georgi Ivanov and the leadership of Russian gas company Gazprom in Saint Petersburg.

VREME

Although Branko Crvenkovski, the head of the main opposition party, the Social Democrats, has publicly asked for snap polls at the end of this year he is aware that his party is not ready for early elections, local observers say for the daily.

To support their claims they mention unofficial reports that at the last meeting between Crvenkovski and the head of the junior government party, the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration, DUI, he urged Ali Ahmeti not to leave the ruling coalition with VMRO DPMNE party yet.
