Parties play safe with candidate for local elections; Post office fire raises irresponsible management issues in the service

Political parties prefer well known politicians and office holders for mayoral candidates at the forthcoming local elections slated for March. Both the ruling VMRO DPMNE and the opposition Social Democrats, regardless of their boycott threats, have made lists comprised out of people who are well known to the public, hoping that this will boost their chances for victory.

The fiery inferno that devastated Skopje’s main post office on January 15, taking away valuable assets and artwork that was not insured, was just the last in a series of events resulting in losses and damaged property of this public service. In the past, the most common criticism that the post office received were its poor protection of money transport which resulted in many thefts. Only in one case the money were found and also only in one case the stolen money were insured.
