Macedonia Press Review ' August 20, 2010

Here are the top stories in Macedonia’s main newspapers. Balkan Insight has not verified the reports and cannot vouch for their accuracy.
DNEVNIK
Macedonian citizens and companies are finding it increasingly difficult to repay their debts as the cost continuously rises, the daily says. The total debt burden increased from 1,5  billion denars (24,5 million euros) in 2006 to 5,5 billion denars (90 million euros) last year. The trend is expected to continue, with the  Macedonian National  Bank warning the rise may hamper economic stability.

UTRINSLI VESNIK
The main ruling VMRO DPMNE party has made a great display of its policy of ensuring state officials in lower ranks do not hold offices in other institutions, the newspaper says. However the PM and party leader Nikola Gruevski has been very tolerant when it comes to his own ministers. He has also not commented on Education Minister, Nikola Todorov, whose ministry approved a controversial textbook for fifth grade students which portrayed popular TV presenters as icons of Macedonian culture. It has since been withdrawn.

VREME
Amid harsh criticism of over-employment within state administrations, the government has continued advertising jobs in newspapers, the daily says. The latest, from the Pension Insurance Fund, asks for 75 new employees.
