Macedonia Press Review ' April 9, 2010

Here are the top stories in Macedonia’s main newspapers. Balkan Insight has not verified the reports and cannot vouch for their accuracy.

DNEVNIK

Risto Pejovski, the train driver who warned the public last month that the trains in Macedonia are not safe due to insufficient maintenance, has been suspended from work and may even be fired, the daily reveals. The syndicate of the state-owned Macedonian Railways came out with the warning after two trains derailed last month, leaving several people injured.

UTRINSKI VESNIK

In anticipation of the six-month Macedonian presidency of the Minister’s Committee of the Council of Europe, which is slated to start on May 11, consultations continue about how the country should be named during its tenure. The most probable solution is to name it simply the 'Macedonian presidency', but there are questions as to whether or not Greece would object.

VREME

Macedonia was not among the countries from the region invited to join US president Barack Obama at the dinner organised on the sidelines of the US –Russia summit in Prague. The daily writes that the dinner was for states that participate in the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, where Macedonia is the fourth largest contributor in relation to country size. This is a diplomatic message to our authorities that should be read carefully, local analysts say for the daily.
