The most positive anti-corruption development in Macedonia in April was the police operation dubbed “Metastasis”, in which over 30 people were detained on suspicion of issuing illegal disability pensions, the editors-in-chief of Macedonia's top news outlets indicated in a poll.
15 out of 17 editors-in-chief of print and electronic media outlets elected this event as the most positive development in the monthly opinion poll on corruption conducted by the local news agency Makfax and the NGO Transparency - Zero Corruption.
The police last month busted employees in the State Pension Fund and medical doctors suspected of taking bribes in exchange for arranging illegal pensions for their clients.
The editors also chose the least positive development in April, selecting the case of an economic promoter who was paid by the government to attract foreign investments for Macedonia and allegedly worked on his private firm instead.
Filip Petkov, who has been criticized in the media for establishing a private firm in US at the same time that he was sent by the government to attract foreign investments there, got ten votes from the editors.
The survey is conducted every month as part of Macedonia's anti corruption effort.
