Kosovo Serb Party Wants to Join Thaci

The largest Kosovo Serb political party, The Independent Liberal Party, SLS,  is willing to reform a ruling coalition with Hashim Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, its leader has confirmed.

“The good experience we had with the ruling parties during the last term will help us make the decision to be part of the Kosovo government once again,” SLS leader Slobodan Petrovic said.

According to him, the SLS’s mandate is “to represent and articulate the problems of the Serb community and everyone else living in Kosovo”.

He added the party had "plenty of reasons" to join a future government.

The final election results from the December 12 poll have not yet been published as a recount of 40 per cent of polling stations is under way and a revote will be held in three municipalities in January.

But the SLS expects at least nine seats in Kosovo’s parliament, which would ensure it remains the largest Serb party, and the PDK looks set to become the largest overall party, with around 30 seats.

It remains unclear, however, whether the PDK will be able to form a stable coalition of more than 60 seats in parliament.

Petrovic believes that other Serb representatives and MPs of other communities will join the SLS parliamentary group, which could bring the total to 15 MPs.

Commenting on the Council of Europe's report on organ trafficking, Petrovic said that rapporteur Dick Marty had levelled some grave charges against Thaci.

"These are serious accusations, but in this case we need to work on the principle that everyone is innocent until proven otherwise," the SLS leader added.
