In Pictures: Protests Mark the Opening of Bulgaria’s EU Presidency

As Bulgarian and European officials were making speeches at the opening ceremony for Bulgaria’s first EU Presidency, thousands of people took to the streets to protest.


As Bulgaria hosted the opening ceremony for the country’s first EU Presidency in Sofia on Thursday evening, outside, thousands of people took to the streets to protest a controversial development plan in the UNESCO-protected Pirin national park.

A smaller rally in support of the cabinet’s December decision to allow expansion of the Bansko ski resort took place simultaneously and was joined by local mayors, MPs from the region and Bulgaria’s deputy prime minister, Valeri Simeonov.
