Half a Million Voters Prepare for Montenegro Poll

Most of the voters are in the capital Podgorica, where more than 160,000 people can cast their ballot. The government announced the figures on Thursday.

Voters next week will choose from 13 political entities – seven coalitions, five parties and a group of citizens will all be competing for 81 seats in the Montenegrin parliament.

Polls show that the current ruling coalition is again expected to win the most votes, but it is not yet clear if they will garner enough support to form a majority government.

In late September, civil society groups said that complaints about Montenegro's electoral roll had not been addressed, raising concern about the outcome of the poll.

The Network for Affirmation of Non-Governmental Sector, MANS, said that the central electoral roll contained the names of at least 14,267 voters who had one or more "doubles", that is, people with the same names, surnames and addresses but with different ID numbers.

In response, government officials said they were dealing with any remaining glitches. Ivan Brajovic, the Interior Minister, said that each mistake was being addressed immediately.

The October elections are the ninth since the introduction of multiparty democracy in Montenegro, and the third since the country declared its independence in 2006.
