Some 300 lorries are stranded on the main border crossing between Greece and Macedonia due to the ongoing strike by Greek customs officers, local media report.

The Bogorodica-Evzoni crossing is full of lorries with goods that are begining to smell a bit questionable as they age, and the patience of lorry drivers is coming to an end, local Vreme daily reports.

“This is a catastrophe. I have been here since late Monday. It’s freezing. I am carrying fish and God knows what condition my cargo is in,” one Croatian lorry driver told the daily.

Most of the lorries come from Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Germany and Holland, according to the daily.

Greek custom officers began a three day strike on Tuesday in response to the government's austerity measures, which are designed to tackle the severe economic crisis the country currently faces. According to government predictions, many Greek civil servants will face income cuts due to slashes in public spending.
