Jordanovski fell sick in the afternoon hours. He later lost consciousness and doctors were unable to revive him. The official cause of death has not been released.

The 57-year-old, long active in politics in Macedonia, held the post of speaker of the parliament from 2003 until 2006.

In 2006 he also served as Macedonia’s ambassador to the United States.

The assembly is expected to hold a commemorative session today, current parliament speaker Trajko Veljanovski told media.

Ljupco Jordanovski was born on February 13, 1953 in the central Macedonian town of Stip. He was married and a father of three.

Although he held a doctorate degree in electrical engineering, Jordanovski was active on the Macedonian political scene from the time the country gained independence in the early 1990s until his death.

A long time member of the Social Democratic party, in recent years Jordanovski served as the president of the small centre-left opposition, the Party Of Free Democrats.
