Flow of Migrants Drains Bosnia of its Youth

Dispirited by never-ending political quarrels and a dire economic and social situation, people are leaving Bosnia en masse, searching for better future abroad.

Neither the Christmas and New Year Eve’s festivities, nor freezing temperatures, drizzle and snow, have stopped dozens of people from lining up in front of the Slovenian consulate in Banja Luka, Bosnia, every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

This is when the office accepts applications for residency permits.

“I hope I have all the documents. Last time, I stood here for three hours in the cold, just to realize that I was missing one,” Srdjan, from Knezevo in central Bosnia, told BIRN.

Like most of those applying for residency permits in Slovenia’s consular offices in Sarajevo or Banja Luka, Srdjan plans to leave Bosnia as soon as he gets the papers.
