A psychiatrist told the trial of four men charged for the Srebrenica murders that Stanko Kojic is a paranoid schizophrenic and could not have understood what he was doing in July 1995.
Ratko Kovacevic, testifying before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday, said that a team of experts concluded that Kojic was in a state of “extreme emotional tension” at the time of the Srebrenica massacre.
“The results of the tests show that he is paranoid, suspicious, has an inferiority complex and inner fantasies, which are all symptoms of schizophrenia. We have learned that Kojic is suffering from strange, illogical visions, often with religious themes,” said Kovacevic.
Kovacevic claimed that Kojic could not have fully understood the situation he was facing at Srebrenica.
“For example, when the Srebrenica civilians were brought to Branjevo, he was told to fire, so he took the rifle and fired. He lost control and had hallucinations. He said he saw heads which changed size. He did the only thing he could,” said Kovacevic.
Kojic is charged along with Franz Kos, Vlastimir Golijan and Zoran Goronja with genocide by participating in the murder of more than 800 men and boys on the Branjevo military farm in July 1995.
Kos, a former Commander of the First Unit with the Tenth Reconnaissance Squad of the Army of Republika Srpska Main Headquarters and squad members Kojic, Golijan and Goronja are accused of shooting prisoners.
The trial will continue on February 7.
