The European rule of law mission in Kosovo, EULEX, has revealed that an independent panel to review human rights' abuses by its stuff will start dealing with complaints soon.
The news comes after the international pressure group Human Rights Watch, HRW, criticised the European Union Council for still not having approved "an independent review mechanism for EULEX", 12 months after the mission became operational.
HRW said this called into question "the EU's commitment to accountability for potential abuses arising from the exercise of the executive mandate of a flagship European Security and Defence Policy mission."
But EULEX told Pristina Insight that the EU Council had decided to establish the Human Rights Review Panel back in November.
Spokeswoman Karin Limdal said: "The recruitment of the panel members and staff for the secretariat is ongoing as we speak."
She added that the panel would soon start its work dealing with complaints.
Both communities in Kosovo blame politics for the trial of Fatmir Limaj - though from diametrically opposing points of view.
