A man charged over the killing of two elderly Serbs in Dalmatia in 1995 has been arrested in Germany, police in the Croatian town of Sibenik revealed on Tuesday.

Bozo Bacelic, 42, has been accused together with three other men of killing 76-year-old Nikola Damjanic and Milica Damjanic, 74, and burning their bodies on August 11, 1995.

The crime was committed in the village of Prokljan in central Dalmatia, after the Croatian military's Operation Storm which retook Serb-held territory.

At the time the crime was perpetrated, Bacelic was the commanding officer of a reconnaissance platoon of 113th Croatian army brigade.

Bacelic, together with Ante Mamic, Luka Vuko and Jurica Ravlic, was acquitted of the crime by the Sibenik County court in 2002. But the Croatian Supreme court annulled the verdict and ordered a new trial.

Bacelic went on the run before the new trial in August 2007 and remained at large until his capture on February 9 this year.

During investigations for the first trial, the defendants admitted they had committed the crime but later retracted their confessions.
