Regulator Threatens to Switch Off RTL Croatia

"We don't have [any] choice but to turn RTL off," said Zdenko Ljevak, president of the Council for Electronic Media which told RTL a week ago that it must subtitle the Serbian movies.

"We are forced to [take] such a drastic measure, because the leaders of RTL systematically ignored our warnings," he said on Thursday.
 
Ljevak said a final decision about how long RTL, one of three national broadcasters, would remain off the air would be taken in two weeks. He said that he would suggest that RTL should remain dark until it complies with the regulator’s requests.
 
The station has so far ignored the demands, airing the Serbian movie Zika's Dynasty without Croatian subtitles on Sunday night.
 
A spokesperson for RTL said the station could not see why it should be taken off the air. “We are in constructive negotiations with the council,” said RTL’s Natasa Roksandic.
 
The council warned RTL about its programming three times in 2011. In one instance, the station was told to change the time at which it aired the reality programme Big Brother.
