Bulgarian police are investigating the murder of businessman Petar Hristov, who was shot dead at around 10am on Monday in Sofia’s Manastirski Livadi neighbourhood and died shortly afterwards in hospital.

The main version that the authorities are working on is that the murder is related to Hristov’s business interests, “which are various”, the head of the national police directorate, Hristo Terziiski, said on Monday.

The 49-year-old was an influential businessman and a member of the Board of Directors of Properties Management Group Holding, which owns companies in the food industry, infrastructure and construction, tourism, finance and consulting. The holding owns one of Bulgaria’s largest dairy producers, Lactima.

He was also a member of a consultative body to the Ministry of Regional Development.

Police on Monday said they had not excluded possibilities that personal motives could be behind the murder.

Hristov’s murder is the second one to shake Bulgaria since the begining of the year. On New Year’s, six people were shot in a house in Sofia’s district of Novi Iskar on New Year’s Eve.

The suspect behind this unprecedented mass murder was found dead on Sunday after he allegedly committed suicide. The motives behind the massacre remain unknown.

Talk about it!
