Suggestions by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Serbia's Tourism Minister Rasim Ljajic – that Serbia may hold a referendum on the Serbia-Kosovo issue – have drawn a sceptical response from regional experts.

“I see this as a preparation for something, or taking the pulse of citizens about how they think, when anyone mentions ‘referendum’ and ‘Kosovo’ in same sentence,” Boban Stojanovic, from the Belgrade Faculty of Political Science, told BIRN.

Aleksandar Popov, from the Novi Sad-based Centre for Regionalism, an NGO, said Serbian politicians are aware already of the likely outcome of such an referendum.

“The majority of citizens would vote for Kosovo as part of Serbia, because that myth is still very strong in the Serbian narrative,” he told BIRN.
