Police on Thursday arrested three people and issued a warrant for a fourth suspect over of the murder of a mother and her son in Patos in 1997.
“In cooperation with prosecutors in the city of Fier, police were able to collect evidence, which sheds light on the murder of Drita and Ermail Rapollari on April 3, 1997,” the general directorate of police said in a statement.
“The three suspects have been detained and charged with premeditated murder and weapons charges,” the police added.
Albania suffered a period of anarchy and breakdown of law and order in 1997, following the collapse of a series of pyramid-like investments schemes in which a good part of the population had invested their savings.
The unrest, which followed the collapse of the investments scheme and the looting of the army depots, led to widespread violence with hundreds of recorded victims.
Dozens of murder cases from the period remain till this day unsolved.
