A total of 42,372 Macedonians now have a Bulgarian passport, up from 35,808 the previous month.

The data comes from the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.

All European Union countries plan to open their labor markets to Bulgarian citizens in 2014, which may account for the increased interest.

Representatives of the Foreign Ministry in Skopje have said that Macedonia is monitoring the situation closely, but cannot do anything to stop people from obtaining the passports.

They say that all applications for foreign citizenship are analysed, and that most people are interested in acquiring Bulgarian citizenship for social or economic reasons.
